Amber Day
This is me trying to get back into noting down things I have found in the creative world which inspire me in some way.

I stumbled across the name Amber Day recently, she is a LA-based illustrator who says to find her own work rather therapeutic. It seems that her work is not just about flat shallow design, it is deeper than that, where there are stories to be told and questions to be answered.

Her illustrations stood out to me due to the contrasting colour choice (as she uses vivid hues which competes with dark shades of different colour) and the varied scale throughout her designs emphasise the stories being told and capturing the depth in each illustration. Although the proportions and angles of shape and line are not completely real, some may say this is not ideal, yet I definitely suggest that this is another factor which adds to he beauty of her illustrations. The brushes she uses too, make me want to branch out with my techniques, instead of focusing on flat works, adding texture would really shove my work further to where I would want it to be.

I notice that some shapes are lacking their own colour, the colour is brought from other shapes (if this makes any sense at all…). What I mean by this is that for example in one of the illustrations (above) where there is a character standing, holding a basket with carrots in, her socks are created with lime green vertical stripes which provide the skeleton of the socks, there is not actual outline of the socks to separate the socks from the blue background. I enjoy this small aspect that came be noticed in a handful of her designs.

Amber Day’s stunning illustrations inspire me to push my illustrations further by using texture from different brushes and to make sure that I understand that no line has to be perfect to create such amazing work.
