Aura Lewis is a New York Illustrator who is inspired by fashion, pop culture and vintage design. Her work is mostly seen in books, which have been published by Hachette, Abrams, Sterling Publishing, Chronicle Books and many more. Her clients include Hallmark, Disney, The New York Times, Hawaii Business Magazine, Flow Magazine and yU+co.

The work of hers that I was initially drawn to was her bright coloured work, simply because it caught my attention first. It is totally usual for me to be drawn to these types of design with a range of colour. But looking further into her website, I see that not all of her designs are colourful, which is nice to see because I do not usually feel attracted to muted colour palettes. This is interesting to me because it shows that her style is not limited to colour, it is more about the shape she uses and the subject matter, this indicates that she has a very varied range of interests.

Figures within her designs are very two dimensional and stiff, which can be identified as different to other illustrators that I have looked at for inspiration. I included the illustrator in my blog because of this, in a way. I wanted a slight difference. Something that I am still inspired by but not just hold a collection of the same type of styles.

I can see small part of her designs hold patterns and details which add to the beauty of her designs, which I find to be flat and structured.

On her website, there is a range of different books which she has helped to illustrate but I find that these books are completely different styles to what is on her Instagram feed. Don’t get me wrong, there are some key similarities between both, yet on her Instagram there are more bright, energetic designs which hold more character and positivity. The majority of the images I have used are from her Instagram because I feel that they are stronger, but that is only personal preference of course.

Within some of Aura Lewis’ illustration, there are some textures and noticeable brush marks which add detail to her designs, plus it makes the designs seem vintage, just as she states is one of her inspirations.
