Ruby Taylor

Ruby Taylor is an illustrator based in Bristol, who says that her inspirations are women’s experience, pop culture and everyday life. Her clients include, Ikea, Adidas, Penguin and many, many more! Looking through her portfolio of work, her designs have been put of t-shirts, wine bottles, hairspray cans and other products which shows how her work is rather diverse and can be applied to many brands.

The very first design which drew me to visit her website was the one above, (at the very top). These are stickers that have been drawn which are so raw yet vibrant. I love the mixture of handwritten typography here with the idea that outlines around the stickers are not needed. Clearly there is a tiny amount of detail which she uses to create small amounts of structure but like I said, nothing too extreme… which is great!

She uses solid block colours within her work, with mainly people as her subject matter. Her designs are flat yet quirky as the two-dimensional aspect brings a cartoon-like feel to her illustrations. I can see little sections of texture within her work, which is needed because it makes her designs subtle and not too overwhelming with subject matter and techniques.

The colours that she uses are gorgeous, especially mixed with a couple of patterns, here and there. Her work really shows that if minute yet necessary detail is added then the design will pop out of the page.

All in all, her designs are great fun and I’m excited to see what’s next for the amazing illustrator!
