WOMXN - Sticks and Stones is a book written by Lexy Wren Sillevis. The book has acrostics and poems to bring reclamation to the words that women have ever been called over the years. She wrote the book when she was in lockdown in March 2020 just simply writing it on her phone. The book is sold online at Amazon and in stores such as Urban Outfitters, Oliver Bonas and Waterstones.

Lexy Wen Sillevis (the author) is an actor, a poet, an energy worker, a storyteller and a mother. I was not able to find too much about her unfortunately, but I did manage to find out more about her book.

WOMXN - Sticks and Stones is filled with lovely bright illustrations that hold an amount of movement.

The designs, by Margaux Carpentier, remind me of Egyptian cave painting style, with prominent figures that are comprised of shape. Within her illustrations she uses gradients, textures and coloured thin outlines to depict the subject matter. On a page where there is a drawing, they are very much two dimensional, flat and solid. This factor can link to the other pages which have text on them with brightly coloured background of flat and solid colour.

On pages, in this gorgeous book, where there is an acrostic poem or even just text alone, there are small little details of shapes that float around the page. These small compositions remind me of confetti and celebrations. This idea can link back to the aim of her book, to be positive and in a way stand up against the things that have been said to you in the past.

The black type that she uses is stunning! There are two main pieces of typography in place here. One is called Vulture (which is curvy with areas of heavy weighted lines with a contrast of thin lines) and the other one is called Lexia (which is the more legible serif typeface that is used for the majority of the poems).

All in all, I love the content in the book and using harsh words and deflecting them away with poetry. Reading acrostic poems remind me of my childhood which makes the book personal to me in a way, along with the warming memories that it brings back.
